Sleep Apnea should be a Presumptive Condition for Gulf War Vets
Sleep Apnea should be made a Presumptive Condition for All Gulf War Veterans! Every Gulf War Vet I know has Sleep Apnea, including myself. Currently, "Undiagnosed Sleep Disturbances" are considered a presumptive for us, but good luck getting a VA Doc to diagnose you with an "Undiagnosed" condition. Diagnosed Sleep Apnea is prevalant in the Gulf War Vet population, and should be service connectable on a presumptive basis.

I went to Desert Storm a healthy specimen of a soldier. Could run a marathon and strong as hell. Once I returned, I was shitting myself, horrible dreams, fighting for my breath in dreams and wanted to kill myself on most days. Was exposed to sarin, took PB pill, anthrax shot twice, botulism shot, oil well fire smoke for weeks and lived through 13 scud attacks. One attack about blew my head off and lost hearing from it. Burning shit in a can and burnpits a blazing. A shit load of shots and lived in mop 4. Have been service connected for PTSD, IBS, TINNITIS, HEARING LOSS, ED, FIBROMYALGIA, central serous retinopathy, daily headaches, got lumps on my body, white shit on my tongue, low vitamin d, very low testosterone, ying ying sound in my head when I move my eyes, spots on my pituitary gland, adrenal glands and kidneys and shit in my lungs. Short of breath, cronic cough, numbness in my hands, central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. I have went to funerals of fellow veterans for cancer and fellow veterans with thyroid cancer. Tell me this is normal and I will say bullshit. Our government is shitting on us and assholes make comments on this site that haven't done shit for this country. I struggle everyday to keep from blowing my fucking brains out. 22! 22 veterans a day commit suicide. And they wonder why? They want us too, so they dont have to answer the questions. Evidently if you don't know what I speak of, you haven't experienced shit.

If I do sleep it usually is only a couple hours at time. I usually stay awake for a couple of days with intermittent sleep. Then exhaustion hit. Come home from work andone crash until the next morning

What you need to understand is that the medication you are on to treat PTSD, Depression and chronic pain all can cause Sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is not caused by PTSD and thus you cannot file a claim for it being caused by PTSD (secondary to PTSD). It is due to the medication you are taking for PTSD or depression. You also need a doctor nexus to that fact. Some medication do have these known side effects, along with the weight gain. Read the article in ngwrc.org -

I couldn't even be rated at 0%. My denial stated that even though my SA was directly aggrevated by my PTSD, obesity is still the main cause of my SA. They took one segment out of a whole sentence that my Dr. wrote in a nexus letter and used it as a reason not to grant a rating.

I am just another frustrated Gulf War veteran, and was denied again. Not only do I have sleep apnea, and also have the CPAP machine, the VA has denied all my claim. I am tiried and only 58 years old that served this country (12 active and 7 reserve), but because of my conditions, to include asthma, I couls not complete 20 good years to retire when I reach 60. Making me sick in the stomach, as I continue to see doctors after doctors, and none will write me a letter indicating that "Yes, these conditions could had been Gulf War related". I had one VA doctor tell me he didn't care and that I could not prove I was even there. Making me mad and very frustrated, and I ask was his support in his diognose for all I am getting treated, which all listed Gulf War Undiognose Syndrome. I don't know who to turn these days, and now to matter worse, I am unemployed and receive no unemployment becuase in Georgia we only get 14 weeks. I might as well be homeless with my family. I am asking if someone knows of any other support us Gulf War veteran can turn to for help in getting our well deserve disability, I am truly appreciated. Thx.

Unfortunately, those that have long left service can only hope a compassionate doctor to aid in the fight for the lacking evidence in our SMR. Those active service reading take note that the SMR must be documented properly to pave the way for a future VA claim. Do not suck up your illnesses or injuries. Document evetything. Keep copies of all your orders, keep in contact with past comrades if needed for evidence. Be sure while in active service be dure to see a specialist to diagnose all mefical problems snd discuss where, when and why is written in thd SMR. NEXUS, chronic 6 months, combat related war or training, all get in the records. Periodically check doctor notes and if not accurate go back and have it corrected.

Terry, you need to reopen your case because you temporarily stopped breathing during Desert Storm. This temporary lack of oxygen is known as hypoxia or oxygen deficiency, which is bad for the heart as well as the rest of the body. You need an up to date sleep study test to confirm the presence of sleep apnea. Only in this this way can the two be linked together, because the two are definitely service-connected from Desert Storm. You may need to be on a CPAP machine.

You need to get a pulmonary doctor to say you got a restrictive airway or lung problem. That in itself will rate a 0% disability, but because obstructive sleep apnea is somehow connected with restrictive airways, it will rate a 30% disability, and then with the CPAP machine for breathing at night, the disability will total 50%. That's all you will get, because no pyramiding is allowed.

I'm a Desert Storm Vet. and I have tried to get disability for sleep apnea but was told I had a irregular heartbeat only, my heartbeat issues started because I stop breathing while sleeping during desert storm and was hospitalize for a week. I have grown tired of the fight with the V.A., the V.A. wasn't giving anyone sleep apnea fro that time frame.

I wad waiting for my study and no one called me back! This was 10 years ago. I submit another request again and I never had anyone call me back. I wrote the congress person in my district, I thought that would help? Yeah right. So last year I submit a sleep study in October of last year. I was told that it would be in September 2014 because they are backlogged.
