I was in Gulf War 1990-1991 started getting sever rashes 1993 and then Type 1 diabetes in 2001. About 15 years ago, I read an article about a group (I think they were National Guard out of Luisiana deployed to the Gulf War, and 10 years after being in the Gulf a lot of them (a larger number compared to the general population) were being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
I fall into this approx 10 years out I get diabetes. We were given the Anthrax shot (which left a big bump in my arm for over a week) and were taking Primaquine daily. They were spraying for flies around camp and had bowls of fly killing bait everywhere. I read another article around the same time about a Dr who had connected the use of Primaquine and the fly bait to health issues. I haven't thought about or looked into this in over 15 year because I was told back then by the VA that diabetes could not be service connected. -

Yup, me too. Was in the Gulf over 9 months. Got out of the Corps in end of '92. Started going to College and noticed I couldn't get through a class without sprinting down the hall to take a full fledged piss. Was also drinking water every half hour. Went to the VA due to these issues not going away. They're analysis after blood work said I was running sweet. I asked what that meant. They said I had Diabetes and needed to start an insulin regiment and get trained up on diabetes. No where in the Family and got it 2.5 years after being out. It's nice to hear I'm not the only one. This disease has changed my life in a huge way. Almost died many time from insulin shock. There seems to definitely be a trend here. I had to share and tell my story and contribute.

A co 3/69 Armor, Iraq Sept 1990- Mar 1991, I have R/A, DiabetesType II, Ptsd and was exposed to sarin/cyclosarin gas along with D.U.
I have no family history of any of these, but my question is, how can we all have similar issues with the only common denominator being the Gulf War and not be covered ?

The CFR states that you cannot claim diabetes due to your exposure in the gulf war. That was a part of the Congress intent when they expanded the law in 2001. Congress had in the intent that diabetes and MS was not to be granted along with other things.

HHC 1st BCT Iraq 2003. I have also been diagnosed with serval illnesses by the VA. Type 1 diabetes mellitus and Celsius decease along with Gulf War Bowel Syndrome, some how they are all connected. Perhaps them Anthrax and Small Pox Vaccination played a huge part in this case. Trying to set up a registry for all of us please call me 317-408-0812 Tony Woods.

I too am a Gulf vet 90-91 was a medic with the 41st attached to the 24th I.D. and ended up in the Khamisiyah area. Came home with the nausea, vomiting , diarrhea could drop 15-20 pounds in a 24 hour period. was diagnosed in 1994 with diabetes .And eventually with pancreatic dysfunction. My primary care provider at the VA started me on enzymes and it greatly helps the symptoms . He also wrote a support letter stating had the condition been treated earlier the diabetes more than likely would not have developed. I wear an insulin pump & constant glucose monitor due to severe sugar level swings . Of course the VA strongly fights against my claim and his support letter. Am looking for other Brothers & Sisters who are suffering the same denials .

Wow, cannot believe I found this! I always took great care of myself and have no family history of diabetes and was and still not over weight. I was in the 90-91 Gulf War and was forced to take nerve agent pills every morning in formation. In 2008, I was diagnosed mistakenly as a type 2 diabetic but now they are calling it type 1 or type 1.5.

I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes, no history in the family. I have started working with the VA, even though currently I'm being told its not recognised at this time being from the Gulf War, figure they didn't recognise for Vietnam era folks for a long time either.
